Mental Health Worker and Activities therapist

June 2018 • Providence, RI

What I liked

Butler gave me excellent clinical experience in my field of interest being clinical psychology. It is often hard to see what a counseling type setting is like without some sort of licensure, therefore, my position at butler afforded me to see if this field was a good fit for me and my future career path.

What I wish was different

Respect among the employees. My position was a summer temp position, therefore, because many of us were not full time employees we were not treated the same as the full or part time staff. Also, higher up staff like the nurses, who are the ones who basically are in charge of the unit especially during second and third shift would talk down or take advantage of the mental health workers.

Advice

Be able to read people thoroughly, patients can be very manipulative to get what they want, so it is crucial to be aware of this common behavior tendency. Have a ton of patience and do not get aggravated when patients treat you poorly because you cannot react back to them, it is all about de-escalation and remembering that these people are very sick.
