BYU Broadcasting

Editorial Student Assistant

December 2020 • Provo, UT

What I liked

I love working with a small team of people. I also love the flexibility, and how even though I filled a role that someone else was leaving, I still get to develop the role and make it my own while adjusting to what is asked of me.

What I wish was different

As an editor, it's a hard balance to want lots of writing to do and to edit and knowing that in general, the more words there are in a newsletter, the less likely people are to read it. Knowing that balance, one can understand how I wish I had had more writing and editing experience; it can feel limiting at times.

Advice

BYU Broadcasting is a fantastic place to work! The full-time and student employees get to interact a lot, and it's a fun environment where I feel cared about as a student, an employee, and as a person.

Flexible hours, great leadership and work environment, lots of opportunities to learn new things and gain new skills.

My coworkers are awesome. They are willing to answer any question I had. I also got to learn a new skill (how broadcasting works) that would've been otherwise difficult to learn about.

What I wish was different

Assistant Editor

May 2018 • Provo, UT

What I liked

I love the people and the work, it is a friendly environment and it gives a lot of real world experience and is a resume builder if you are wanting to go into this type of work

What I wish was different

Sometimes I wish they would give more trust or responsibility to the students working here, but I also understand why they are cautious. And don't get me wrong, the students still do great work, and do a lot of work, and they are very trusting, but there is a line between student and full time faculty. I also wish there was more opportunity to stay on after graduation, but again, I can understand why there isn't.

Advice

Do what you can now to get the experiences you can get. Do what you want now, so that later down the road you know what you are doing!
