BYU Harold B Lee Library

Archival Intern

September - December 2018 • Provo, UT

What I liked

I learned so much about the archival profession and just about being a special collections librarian in general. Very good experience for anyone interested in a public history career.

What I wish was different

I wish it was longer

Advice

Take it seriously from start to finish. There were multiple “units” I guess, that I participated in throughout the whole semester. Each unit was important and helped me learn new skills and ideas even though they weren’t all completely connected to what I want to do in the future.

Media Services Specialist

March 2019 • Provo, UT

What I liked

The job was/is engaging, with a diverse set of responsibilities, including laser cutting/engraving, 3D printing/scanning, operating a virtual reality station, and so on. The supervisor is great and my coworkers have been wonderful to work with.

What I wish was different

Not much, really.

Advice

You will have a lot of moments when everything is calm and you might not have an obvious thing to do - take a moment to think about what all you could do that would be productive for the job, maybe ask the supervisor if there's anything he'd like you to work on, and get productive!

Student Manuscript Processor

May 2019 • Provo, UT

What I liked

I love how my internship turned into my current job. I get to work with so many manuscripts and be able to not only touch, but be touched, by history of people that came before me, and how I can shape my own future around the things I learn.

Student Programmer

January 2019 • Provo, UT

What I liked

There are really great managers there that are all concerned about making sure you have the resources to succeed. There were also legitimate projects for students to work on that get deployed into production and are actually used. They also had very flexible hours and time off.

Advice

Highly recommend working here, especially while taking classes, managers understand that you're a student first and accommodate that.

Reference Assistant

January - August 2018 • Provo, UT

What I liked

I loved the people I worked with and being able to talk to people as I worked.

What I wish was different

There was a lot of slow time during the summer, so I wish there could have been a few more substantive things to do, but overall I was busy and learning a lot!

Advice

It’s so important to get to know coworkers and develop relationships with them. Work is so much better when you do that.

Exhibit Designer

January 2017 • Provo, UT

What I liked

I loved designing and building exhibits for our curators. Each one was a new challenge and resembles nothing like the last.

What I wish was different

Sometimes I wish I could cut out more. The academic content is intriguing, but at times there's too much.

Advice

Come fully prepared to have fun, but to work extremely hard.
