SOFTWARE ENGINEER INTERN

May 2019 • Westminster, CO

What I liked

Company culture - CACI (LGS LABS) truly cares about their employees. Coworkers and mentors - The people I work with are incredibly energetic, self-motivated, and are some of the brightest people I ever met. The mentors we had were beneficial in any impediment we faced. Onboarding process - My first week at CACI was spent learning the company, learning the projects, and it was extremely helpful in getting adjusted to the new company.

What I wish was different

Having a security clearance beforehand, but it's not necessary for interns.

Advice

Learning a new framework, technologies, and concepts can be very overwhelming. Take it a day at a time and track your progress. You'll realize how much you grow as a person and an engineer.

Aerospace Engineering Intern

May - December 2020 • Washington, DC

What I liked

I had the opportunity to work remotely and the team was helpful in making sure my experience wasn’t diminished by this fact. Everyone I worked with was always willing to help me learn and took the time to get me up to speed.

What I wish was different

I wish I had more interaction with other interns, but I felt like this was largely due to the pandemic and could’ve been different in a different year.

Advice

Always ask questions. By learning as much as you can and asking for more details, you’ll get more out of the internship and be able to put more in as well.

Software Developer Intern

May 2019 • Aurora, CO

What I liked

CACI-BITS emphasizes intern inclusion on meaningful company projects. They have a flexible work environment where employees are given a lot of freedom to work in the way that best suits them as long as the work gets done. The employees value hard work and cooperation, as well as work-life balance.

What I wish was different

They give a lot of freedom for interns to work on whatever part of the project they feel would be useful. Some more structure and accountability might help direct intern efforts when they are unsure where to apply themselves, especially in a remote work environment. That is a minor point though, I could think of very few issues. The internship experience was overall fulfilling and enjoyable.

Advice

CACI-BITS emphasizes collaboration and inclusion of unique perspectives. If you are considering this job, be ready to work closely with your team members and to bring your individual experiences and outlook to the table. This isn't the type of programming job where you can lock yourself away in a dark office alone all day; the work is highly collaborative.

Aerospace Engineering Intern

May - August 2018 • Sterling, VA

What I liked

I liked being able to apply classic engineering skills in a great teamwork environment to develop a finished product (drone) by the end of the summer.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been more aerospace related material since most of what I did was electrical. However, I view this as being a positive experience since I had responsibilities outside of my comfort zone and this helped me become more adaptable.

Advice

I would advise making friends there because the atmosphere is amazing, and the sooner you're a part of it the more you will enjoy every second working there.

Electrical/Computer Engineering Intern

June 2018 • San Antonio, TX

What I liked

I enjoyed being treated like a real employee and being provided with real engineering experience. I also found it interesting that the engineers, including myself, develop both the hardware and software for a given project. In addition, every employee I worked with was very welcoming and willing to help me when I needed it.

What I wish was different

Advice

Don't be afraid to seek help and ask questions! Sometimes it can be daunting seeming like you don't know much, but that's expected of an intern. Asking questions when you get stuck helps you grow and keeps the project from suffering.
