California Department of Public Health

Contact Tracer and Investigator

June - August 2020 • Santa Clara, CA

What I liked

This experience as a contact tracer and investigator was enlightening and informative. I enjoyed being able to connect with various groups of people to attempt to contain the spread of the COVID-19 disease. It was humbling to hear how everyone was impacted differently by the pandemic, some more so than others. Not only was I able to work on my communication skills, but it also allowed me to gain experience in basic epidemiology by educating others on the disease and updating them on public health safety measures.

What I wish was different

The one difficult aspect of this job was not being able to see the direct affect of my work on the community. I could only see the positivity rate of new cases increasing or decreasing but not how these peoples actions were influenced by my advice. Even with this obstacle, it was still a rewarding feeling being able to do my part and help slow the spread of the virus.

Advice

My advice would be that if anyone has a sliver of time to commit to this job, do it. There is always need for more contact tracing/investigating in whichever state or country you live in. There are incremental benefits associated with this position and with just a phone call you have the potential to save lives.

Safe and Active Communities Branch Intern

May - August 2019 • Sacramento, CA

What I liked

I appreciated the first-hand exposure to the administrative side of health care.

What I wish was different

I would have liked to had more opportunities to go to different events/conferences.

Advice

I would advise anyone going into this experience to make the best with what you have. There will be moments that are difficult, in terms of roommate dynamic as well as adjusting to the workplace. However, it is all a learning experience and I would take it with a positive attitude to push forward and learn from it as there is not success without struggle.

Health Physicist

January 2019 • Sacramento, CA

What I liked

Working for the state tends to be more relaxed than working in the private sector. While the pay may be lower, the state offers tons of benefits such as healthcare, dental, etc.

What I wish was different

While I do enjoy my job, I do wish I had pursued an engineering major in college. Math has always been my passion, but I ended up studying biology instead. If I would’ve changed my major, I might’ve been on a different career path.

Advice

The two most important things to succeed are doing something you enjoy and working in a positive environment. Without either of these, you’re not going to enjoy your work, and it’ll be reflected in your performance. Do what you enjoy for a living, and find a workplace that reinforces your abilities.
