Advice

Do not work here. You are way over worked but underpaid. I quit because I felt that I had responsibilities that were not discussed in my interview and I was not getting the support I needed from my advisors. I decided to work here because we agreed on certain things during my interview, but my actual experience was very different. My team included all people who were brand new to this organization and every time we asked for help, we were given condescending and unhelpful responses. The whole thing was very disorganized and the head counselors were unapproachable and intimidating. One even threatened me saying I was not going to be able to get another job because I quit, but mind you I put in my two weeks notice when many others simply stopped showing up to work.

What I liked

I loved getting to know all of the kids while I was an inclusion counselor, learning how to deal with stressful situations if they arose, and generally making sure that every child had the best camp experience of their life.

What I wish was different

I wish that we had had more resources to make camp a bit more exciting, and a bit more organization within the camp. There were plenty of activities throughout the day, and for the most part days ran smoothly (aside from any drama that children may have had personally), but it would have been even more great if Camp JCC could have organized bigger events, or made camp spaces more welcoming or kid-oriented.

Advice

One thing I'd pass on is to always be patient. Little things (and big things) could go wrong at camp, because that's the simple nature of working with both kids and counselors, and learning how to deal with crises on the fly. But in the end, it always works out and everyone's goal is the same: to be safe and have fun!

What I liked

I loved the staff I worked with and the campers that taught me so much about themselves, myself, and disabilities. I also loved the environment and the enthusiasm that we all shared.

What I wish was different

I wish some of the younger staff understood their responsibilities, but nonetheless it was a fantastic experience once again!

Advice

Always keep an open mind and stay humble.
