Camp Counselor

June - July 2020 • Trinity, TX

What I liked

Being able to interact with so many others safely and outdoors as well as the chance to participate in so many different activities. Having the ability to be active and educate others was a great opportunity. Kids are extremely entertaining and have such different perspectives and they will always keep you laughing and on your toes.

What I wish was different

There is a bit of a camp culture that can be very intimidating if you are new to this environment. I wish I had been a little bit more aware of this or that there was a way that it can be more inclusive. Camp Olympia is very good at making everyone feel welcome, but there are still times when new counselors can feel excluded or simply unaware because they did not grow up at Camp O.

Advice

Be prepared for anything -- whether that be dealing with a huge spider that your campers are scared of, injuries or cuts or scrapes, crazy weather, attitude from campers, etc. -- because it can and will happen. Take everything in stride and don't sweat the small stuff. If you don't make a big deal out of it and handle the situation calmly, your campers won't think it's a big deal either.

Do it. Commit to the kids and it will transform your heat. The other counselors are some of the best friends you could make. Just take a leap.
