What I liked

This job offered a really unique way to connect with citizens and encourage them to be active participants in our democracy. It was so fulfilling to educate people about important environmental issues and get them to connect with their elected officials about the policies that affect them. Being able to see a bill that I worked on advocating for become law in New York State was especially thrilling, and I'm glad that I was able to help communities make a difference, however small.

Advice

You really have to have thick skin to be a canvasser. If you dont go up to a door with confidence and the belief that the people inside are supportive of our campaign, then it's much harder to get them to spend time listening and taking action.

What I liked

I enjoyed being able to work toward a cause that I believe in. At the time we were canvassing for our right to clean water in Connecticut which was being threatened. This job allowed me to strengthen my communication skills through my interactions with people going door to door. I had to practice being knowledgeable and quick on my feet to be able to address the issue while still holding the persons attention, then also answering any questions they may have had.

What I wish was different

I do wish the hours were different, generally we worked from 2pm-10:30pm. While this was a good time to catch people coming home from work, at times people were bothered by how late it was to have a visitor to their door. Similarly, when it got dark I worried about my own safety in unfamiliar neighborhoods, especially those without sidewalks.

Advice

If you find a cause that you are passionate about, it’s definitely a great job to have. Occasionally, it can get discouraging when people react harshly to your presence, especially since people aren’t receptive to visitors that their homes in this day and age, however you do get to interact with some awesome people who also relate to your cause.
