City of Newport Beach

Ocean Lifegaurd

March 2015 • Newport Beach, CA

What I liked

Working in a staff of 200 strong men and women can seem intimidating and overwhelming, yet in the Marine Operations of the Newport Beach Fire Department, family has been a tradition. The relationships that I have and will build working for the City of Newport Beach as a first responder are valuable and rewarding.

What I wish was different

Becuase first responders have historically been males, and such a physically strenuous job is not a possibility for some women, there is a lack of female presence in our department. I beleive over the coming years, efforts to recruit women of all ages that have the aptitude for the job should be heightened in an attempt to integrate and diversify this once hegemonic dominated work force.

Advice

As an ocean/surf lifesaver, physical strength is obviously a must, but behind the tan skin and golden hair of these seemingly relaxed young adults scanning the beach, are minds that are whirring away, always aware of surroundings and future events. Not only doesn’t mental toughness contribute to a sound lifeguard, but also teamwork, poise, and adaptability. I strongly encourage any strong swimmer to reach out to local lifeguard agencies to gain employment. I have learned emergency medical response tactics, public communication skills, teamwork and other important life and workplace skills to launch me into the future.
