I loved knowing that my presence at camp made a big difference in my student’s life and enabled him to attend and participate in the camp program, and I was grateful that my town’s Parks and Rec staff had thought ahead and realized they needed to hire someone for this position in order for my student to be safely included in the program.
What I wish was different
I wish that in addition to our makeshift camp office, we could have had an additional quiet, safe space where my student (and other campers) could rest or take a break.
Advice
If you are working with a student with special needs, it will always be helpful to learn from people who have worked with your student in the past, and always try to get a copy of your student’s IEP.
