Social media and communications intern

May - August 2020 • Tucson, AZ

What I liked

It has been truly the most eye opening experience to work with Colibri. I didn’t even know what a social media and communication internship would entail but I’ve learned so much more than just social media knowledge. Every day I learned something about the crisis on the border and about the injustices that that immigrant community is facing. Social media is an art and you learn how to move people with your creations. You get a lot of space to be creative and they provide you with all the tools. It’s not hard to be inspired when you’re with such an incredible organization.

What I wish was different

Dedicated more time to it because I realized how much I love this work. However, I luckily have been given the opportunity to continue to grow and learn with them by continuing my internship.

Advice

It’s tough work because it can be emotionally overwhelming. The things you see, the stories you hear, the families, the pictures, it’s hard to see so much heart breaking and triggering things. However, it makes what you do for Colibrí that much more important because their work is so unique and important. I would say to come ready to push your creative abilities, to be angered by the horrible things happening to all these people and turn that anger into something incredible to educate others and bring awareness to this crisis that unfortunately isn’t talked about enough.
