Columbia University/New York State Psychiatric Institute

Research Intern

February - November 2020 • New York City, NY

What I liked

I liked how organized and detail-oriented the department was which led to easy training sessions as well as helped interns get use to the work environment.

What I wish was different

I wish they gave a little more supervision on interns on weekends due to the amount of work that was given.

Advice

One piece of advice I would like to share about this experience is that time management is key and learning to hone such a skill will help you in the long run.

Field Intern at Global Psychiatric Epidemiology Group

May - August 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

The experience of conducting structured diagnostic interviews was so unique. I administered the PTSD Life Events Checklist, CIDI diagnostic scales, and KBIT-2 which is an amazing opportunity for an undergraduate. Many of the staff members were very helpful and took a personal interest in us as people rather than just interns; they listened to our educational and career plans as well as our feedback on the internship itself.

What I wish was different

This internship, especially the summer track, is full-time and completely unpaid- you have to work weekends, very late nights (sometimes until around 1pm) and very early morning (sometimes 6am). There did seem to be a lack of consideration for interns' lives outside of this role.

Advice

This internship was extremely demanding- the schedule is subject to change at anytime and you could be called into the office ta any time of day so be prepared to have an extremely inconsistent schedule.

Volunteer

June - August 2018 • New York City, NY

What I liked

It was a great learning experience, and I enjoyed working in the intimate office environment with my team.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been more hands on research and working with kids (I worked in the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Department).

Advice

This is an excellent position for people of all experience levels to more deeply understand the DSM-5.
