Configuration Technician

July - September 2022 • West Chester, OH

What I liked

They welcomed me even though I was still an IT student with little experience in computer networking and scripting. The office's working environment emphasized learning. They valued the bare minimum of just being engaged and actually trying rather than past experience.

What I wish was different

I feel like there should have been more monitoring and formal structure. At the time, the warehouse I was working in suffered from short staffing and thus it was hard for managers to monitor our progress because they had to take on more tasks. However, that could be seen as a pro because that opens flexibility for learning the job at one's own pace and to take on more work.

Advice

Never take any kind of IT experience for granted. Even it's a low level IT support job. In fact, the first step in any industry is the most important for your entire career.

Brand and Digital Communications Intern

May - August 2022 • Philadelphia, PA

What I liked

I really enjoyed the flexible hybrid work environment; I learn best face-to-face, but some days it was easier to complete my tasks from the comfort of my own home. I also got to interact with a lot of the other interns, specifically Comms interns, so that was a valuable networking experience. My supervisor also set up meetings with her various coworkers so I could get a sense of all the elements of Comms. We had a lot of amazing events, from a private Jurassic screening to meeting Team Comcast Olympians, that rounded out the summer. My team was also incredibly kind, welcoming, supportive, and taught me a lot.

What I wish was different

I wish the application/interview/orientation process was a little clearer. I felt like I was scrambling to get things in order. I also wish housing was provided or at least suggestions for housing; since I lived 2.5-3 hours from Philadelphia, I had to seek out options, tour the options, then eventually sign a sublease from a Temple student within 2 weeks of my start date.

Advice

Don't be afraid to apply to the "big" competitive internships! Have a solid resume, prepare for interviews, and be yourself. Your experience and ability will shine through. Network and talk to as many people as possible when you do land the position. You're only there for a short amount of time, so take advantage of the knowledge and resources available to you!
