Committee on Homeland Security

Communications Intern

May - August 2019 • Washington, DC

What I liked

During my experience at the Committee, I really enjoyed being able to use everything that I had learned in class on the job. I was also able to teach them some things about what we learn at Dillard to make their job easier. My most memorable experience was being able to be in a room full of Congressmen and Congresswomen, presidents of important companies like Google and Facebook, etc., and be able to capture moments and write press releases & media advisories that were sent out to the public. This summer opportunity not only allowed me to expand on my knowledge of communications and learn about government, but I also was able to meet some pretty great people.

What I wish was different

The only thing that I wish was different was being able to have more time to create my portfolio for future jobs.

Advice

One piece of advice I would give anyone is to make sure you are always showing yourself as kind. You never know who you may need to get your foot in the door for jobs or internships. Also, always make sure that you are making yourself available because that is why you are interning.
