Common Roots

Flatbread Friday Intern

June 2021 • South Burlington, VT

What I liked

Great community of workers who really care about each individual. I also got to see and interact with people in my community like never before, especially considering Covid.

What I wish was different

Some $$$ would've been nice but I received plenty of benefits.

Advice

I recommend working the food shelf internship with a friend. I was lucky so I got to chat with a friend of mine for a couple of hours every time we volunteered.

Farmstand and Marketing Intern

August - December 2019 • South Burlington, VT

What I liked

I really enjoyed interning at Common Roots my junior year because I got to experience working at a non-profit and learn from great people! I had many different responsibilities as an intern which allowed me to figure out what tasks I enjoyed doing in a professional setting.

Value added product production intern

June - August 2018 • Burlington, VT

What I liked

I was one of two interns under farmer Fae in the kitchen of the Wheeler House doing value-added product production. We made a variety of products to sell at Common Roots’ farmstand. We mass-produced items such as pickles, kimchee, and pesto of various varieties in a well equipped industrial kitchen.

What I wish was different

I wish we had a larger variety of things to cook. Common Roots is a small farm that only grows certain vegetables. Also, some of our recipes went wrong. When we made kimchee, it went bad during fermentation and we were unable to eat or sell it.

Advice

Altogether, I am very grateful for my time at Common Roots and the connections I made through this experience. I admire all of the people who help to make Common Roots run smoothly and efficiently. I am so glad that I can directly make an impact on the community through an organization that teaches place-based education to the youth and families of the Burlington area the connection between themselves and their food.

What I wish was different

I wish it were easier to get there, I wish I could have gotten a wider range of experience
