Structural Engineering Intern

May - August 2018 • McLean, VA

What I liked

I liked the opportunity to be able to touch all kinds of structural engineering projects. The chance to be able to work on local projects that I will see when I'm home was probably my favorite part. Also the team I worked with was great. All of the engineers, not only in my office but the main office in Indy, were extremely supportive. Even though I had no idea what I was doing, I never felt like I had to take on my problems alone.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been there longer! I feel like being with the company longer would have given me more opportunities to work more extensively on larger connection projects. As I was a fresh intern, it is understandable that I only started touching the "fun" projects towards the end of my time with the company.

Advice

I would say don't be afraid to be wrong. No matter how hard you try, you will 9 times out of 10 make an error. Engineers are a team, the people around you are there to help you gain a better understanding so you don't make those same mistakes twice. On that same note, try your best not to make the same mistakes twice. Once you've learned something, write it down and save it for next time you encounter something similar. Eventually your mistakes will get smaller and smaller, and you will realize one day that you know what you're doing.
