Crisis Text Line offers free 24/7 support to people in crisis, all via texting. Crisis Text Line is powered by trained volunteers called Crisis Counselors, who are overseen and supported by Supervisors (paid staff who have higher degrees in psychology or a related field). Crisis Counselors can volunteer from anywhere (as long as they have a private computer and stable internet connection), and they set their own schedules.
To become a Crisis Counselor, individuals must first complete a 30 hour online training that prepares them to support texters in crisis. The training is free and housed completely online too, making it accessible even with the busiest schedule. In Training, you'll learn all the skills needed to support texters in crisis including active listening, crisis deescalation and collaborative problem solving. Throughout training you'll be fully supported by a Coach who is there to support you every step of the way.
Because Crisis Counselors and our staff all work remotely we're able to be there for people across the country even in the most difficult times. Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic we've seen an increase in people reaching out for support. If you're thinking of becoming a Crisis Counselor now is the time we need you most. Come change lives with us and support people across the country in their time of need.
