Take a step out of your comfort zone. Apply or try for things that you think you would never get, you never know what will present itself for you in the future.

Biomedical Engineering Technician

What I liked

I was very interested in the equipment that I was able to work on or repair. I also loved being able to work with people in the hospital and the environment that I was able to work with and the help they gave me. The motto they used was "The device is already broken, you can't break it more so learn everything you can from it".

What I wish was different

I wish that I had been allowed to do more like access to the system and be able to complete work orders on my own. It makes sense that I was not able to but that would have completed the experience.

Advice

If you would like to work in the field of biomedical engineering, seeing how the devices are repaired is very valuable knowledge and will certainly help me when I graduate and will help me create the devices that I hope to make.

What I liked

I work as a supplemental tech so they can send me to whichever hospital and what ever floor they need me at. I really loved this aspect of this job because as a student nurse it really helps me to know what I like and what I do not like.

What I wish was different

Even though it is technically not an internship but more of a job, I wish we could have days more specific to nursing, such as shadow a nurse. As a tech we are usually too busy to follow them around.

Advice

Get a job out there while you are in school and in the field. I have learned so much more than I do in clinical.

Public Relations Intern

What I liked

I loved this internship. I found this opportunity after advice from Career Services saying I should reach out to Hopkins Alumni around where I’m from (outside Philly) for career advice; my supervisor got a master’s degree from Hopkins, and after a phone call about how she got into healthcare communications, she offered me an internship for the summer. I developed an understanding for healthcare communications when interviewing patients, doctors, and other members of the health system for articles for the CKHS online bulletin. I also edited and rewrote various pamphlets for the nationally-recognized Crozer Burn Center and pastoral care. The CKHS Marketing Department truly took me on as one of their own and gave me assignments and projects that were published or printed for the health system. Everyone there is so hardworking, thoughtful, professional, and talented at their jobs. As someone from a humanities background, I never thought I would enjoy working in healthcare. Now, as a senior looking for full-time employment, I’m very grateful to have had this internship with loads of documents for my writing portfolio and solid connections with my coworkers. This internship has definitely helped me in applying for jobs within the healthcare/communications niche.

What I wish was different

There’s nothing I wished to change about my internship experience.

Advice

Don’t be afraid to think “smaller” in the sense of thinking about local opportunities. It’s easy to get lost in the shuffle of a big corporation (especially as an intern), but building connections with where your roots are is sure to pay off.
