Cultural Mixology

Intern

June - July 2021 • Washington, DC

What I liked

I worked as a remote intern for Cultural Mixology in the summer of 2021. Most of my work was related to crafting monthly newsletters and editing the ebook. My mentor Jamie was super flexible and encouraged me to provide my input. I was independent but very much supported. I felt like a valuable part of the team and Jamie took every opportunity to answer my questions and explain how things worked. Jamie was always happy to offer advice and even helped me to network. I had a great time interning at Cultural Mixology and I learned a lot!

Writing Intern

June - July 2019 • New York City, NY

What I liked

During the summer of 2019 I worked remotely with Jamie Gelbtuch at Cultural Mixology; my role was mainly drafting and designing a short ebook on topics related to cultural competency for marketing purposes. Throughout the process, Jamie was not only a manager but an invaluable mentor during one of the most challenging and isolating periods of the pandemic for a rising college senior seeking career development. While we worked on the project, Jamie really took the time to focus on my own growth and what I could take away from the experience – I learned so much about marketing, client relationships, cultural competency, psychology in the workplace, and business writing, all of which turned out to be very transferable. Jamie also generously offered her insights as an employer and career coach by helping me edit my resume and cover letter and learn how best to analyze job postings. Overall, this was an excellent summer experience and I couldn't really have asked for anything more out of it.

What I wish was different

I wouldn't change anything, but it would have been nice to have more time with Cultural Mixology and be able to explore different aspects of the work it does.

Advice

Working with a very small company as a student can be one of the smartest decisions in the long run because personal connections and mentorship are majorly important when you're just starting to find your footing in the professional world.
