What I liked

I enjoyed most of the people I worked with, management included. There was one particular coworker and one particular manager that I didn't quite get along with, but by the end of the summer, I think I had at least earned the respect of the manager. But besides those two at various times, I enjoyed the people I worked with.

What I wish was different

I wish only wish that some of the people I served had been different. For the most part, people are good, or at least okay. But hearing what some of these customers had to say about my Hispanic coworkers was infuriating. And it wasn't abnormal for some of them to treat me poorly up until the point that they found out I was at least partially college educated, as if that made any difference in the respect I was owed.

Advice

I would advise patience. When you're the newbie on the floor, or when you're dealing in customer service in general, you'll need this in spades. Tangentially related, I would advise seeking mental health aid if and when you need and not put it off, despite what your depression or anxiety might be telling you. I had a rough year last year. I worked at McDonald's over the summer because I needed a win to build up upon, something not so easily fumbled. It worked out for me, that decision, but it's a decision I could have avoided making if I'd sought mental health assistance sooner. It could have been study abroad, an internship, independent study, or even a much needed vacation. Instead, it was McDonald's.
