What I liked

I enjoyed the opportunity as a way to help the college and earn some extra money while living at Davidson over the summer. The hours paired well with my workouts/practices a student athlete as well.

What I wish was different

I wish the shifts would have been longer than three hours a day, but I feel like that was incontrollable.

Research Student

May - June 2021 • Davidson, NC

What I liked

I loved that the RISE program was an introduction to research where we got to get to know a faculty member and develop introductory research skills in their lab.

What I wish was different

n/a

Advice

Check to see which professors are offering / participating in the RISE program prior to applying so that you can select a preference of who to work with. Though you'll be matched with a professor anyways, some of the labs you may be more interested in than others.

RISE

May - July 2020 • Davidson, NC

What I liked

I appreciates how willing the program was to adapt to unique challenges that 2020 posed in order to still provide students the opportunity to research. I really appreciated the opportunity to learn more about neuroscience and prion regeneration, an area of great interest to me, through this program. The professor overseeing the program was incredibly flexible and encouraged us to pick topics to research that were of great interest to us.

What I wish was different

I don't think the program could have operated any differently given the circumstances, though I do wish that perhaps we were able to work with multiple different professors whose department aligned with our area of interest. That way, through gaining a foundational background, students might be able to research further with that professor.

Advice

I would really recommend this experience to any first year. It is a great way to get involved in research!

Summer Research Fellow

May - July 2019 • Davidson, NC

What I liked

Working in Dr. Campbell's synthetic biology lab gave me a lot more confidence in picking up wet lab skills, which I didn't have going into the summer. Dr. Campbell also views this position as a stepping stone for his students and he encourages students to go off campus for their next summer research opportunity. Dr. Campbell actively wants to help you succeed and he is very transparent about that, even if it isn't in his best interest to send students to other schools after one summer of research.

What I wish was different

We would often stay past the 5:30pm end of workday time in order to wrap up an experiment, which may deter some students from wanting to apply for a position like this. However, I thought it was good experience to test out whether or not you like to do research because strict hours are not always a part of it.

Advice

If you're at all interested in pursuing biological research in a career, I would recommend this summer experience.
