Democratic Party of Wisconsin

Organizing Fellow

May - August 2019 • Kenosha, WI

What I liked

It gave me the opportunity to experience what it was like to be in the day to day workings of the party. I learned how to use all of the programs that they use to set up canvasses and phone banks. My boss really helped me and worked with me to teach me how everything worked.

What I wish was different

Because it was not an election year, it was difficult to really see what this would look like when the organizing team was working in a maximum pressure situation. We had almost no paid staff and relied solely on volunteers willing to work all year round but since it was not an election year those were few and far between.

Advice

Don't let the bad experiences ruin it. Working on campaigns can be an incredibly rewarding experience. Unfortunately it can be easy to become disenfranchised because people will hang up on you or slam the door in your face, but one good conversation on the local level can make all the difference.
