I was involved in many aspects of the work, as opposed to being restricted to one specific task. I also liked getting out into the field.

Water/Wastewater Treatment Intern
June 2021 • Fairfax, VA
What I liked
I was able to work on projects with nearly everyone in the wastewater business unit across Richmond, Virginia Beach, and my main Fairfax office. Everyone was very patient but honest and direct, which I appreciated as this was my first internship. Everyone I interacted with was very welcoming even the HR team and employees I met at a conference.
I was exposed to the contract work with local municipalities and their ongoing utility demands on a daily basis, which is exactly what I was looking to explore.
What I wish was different
Filling in all the hours I wanted to work was difficult, the work existed, but as an intern, I felt underutilized some weeks.
Advice
Be proactive about your workload! Make sure you are networking and expressing your interest with different employees as you work on a task so that you know you have another project lined up. And remember construction and design work takes time, so patience is key.
