Data Analyst

July 2019 • Ypsilanti, MI

What I liked

Loved working with the Rec/IM and their marketing team. I would pull data from their system and from the website in order for the marketing team to efficiently market events for the Rec/IM

What I wish was different

I wish communication between departments would have been better. On occasion it would take a couple days for the IT team to update the system which stalled the process.

Advice

One piece of advise I would share is to be open minded and communicate when you have a problem. The staff is willing to work with you and are understanding when you feel that a task is too difficult.

Conference Assistant

May - August 2018 • Ypsilanti, MI

What I liked

The opportunity to connect with other students over the summer was a great experience. Additionally, I was able to understand the life of an RA without the intensity of the school year. I loved that I had free summer housing as well as $400 in flex money to use on campus food. It was a very comfortable summer. I'm sure you could earn more living at home and working a higher salary job, but this job was perfect for me while I was taking summer classes.

What I wish was different

There were scenarios where we were understaffed. It would have been nicer to have more co-workers at times. However, I appreciated the advantage this gave me for more work hours.

Advice

Be patient! Sometimes you need to do things that you don't realize are affiliated with your job title. Sometimes you need to go above and beyond. And you need to always feel comfortable with teamwork, because that is going to be important as the summer progresses. Overall, it is a very fun job.

What I wish was different

Advice

Be yourself! Also, if you are not passionate about students and their success, this might not be the best match for you.

NASPA Internship: Program Assistant

June - July 2017 • Ypsilanti, MI

What I liked

I liked how I was able to ask many questions about Higher Education Administration and how welcoming the staff was. They also bought the interns a book full of advice for the rising student affairs professional, as well as a resume workshop. Additionally, EMU allowed me to work on projects that I was interested in, such as multicultural/judicial affairs within the University System.

What I wish was different

I would have loved to sit in on more hearings. However, it was during the summer so I don't think there are many hearings.

Advice

Don't wait for work to come to you, go to your boss and ask for projects. It shows your determination to gain experience.
