Egis

Engineering Intern

August - December 2021 • Indianapolis, IN

What I liked

I really enjoyed being able to work on many different projects that ranged in their size while working in the water resources department. I got to be involved with continual design adjustments of major waterline and storm water drainage projects, but also small relocation projects in correspondence with BLN’s road and bridge departments. I really liked being exposed to the many different steps involved with each of the projects. Each project is much more than just design, and I got to learn about cost estimating, utility coordination, public meetings, and so much more along the way. Overall, the environment of BLN is very much like a family, and each and everyone you work with is beyond supportive and friendly making it very easy to learn and grow as an engineer.

Advice

My greatest piece of advice is to always ask questions. Don’t hesitate, because BLN has so many great resources to help you learn and grow as an engineer while you’re there.

Water Resources Intern

May 2021 • Indianapolis, IN

What I liked

This company provided many resources and helping hands for me to succeed in their work environment. The resources provided to me have benefitted my growth as a future civil engineer and everyone involved has helped in my journey. My supervisors have always been open to answer any questions or comment about my work. My co-workers were also exceptional in providing constructive criticism where it has been needed with my work or the work of others. I genuinely embraced the work culture here. They care about their workers and want them exceed in life. I never felt like an outsider at this company.

What I wish was different

One thing that I wish would have been different is communication between departments. Sometimes, there can be an absence of communication within departments, but this has never been a huge issue. I can understand that engineers here can have a lot on their workload. However, whenever they are available, they are always willing to help me and other fellow interns.

Advice

Never be afraid to reach out to co-workers/supervisors to ask questions. Internships are all about making mistakes and learning from them. Show a growth mindset within the workplace because you will gain a huge amount of knowledge in this field of study from this company. Additionally, be professional in the way you carry yourself. It will go a long way.

Water Resources Co-op

January 2020 - December 2021 • Indianapolis, IN

What I liked

I got a lot of responsibility within my third and fourth co-op terms through smaller more independent projects. I was also working with multiple project managers, whereas my first two terms I was mainly working with one project manger. I was able to see different managerial styles through this experience. I highly recommend doing a cooperative educational experience at BLN if you are interested in the design side of water resources engineering.

What I wish was different

Before the pandemic BLN we had speakers and webinars weekly, I wish the company was able to continue that remotely. It was a great way to break up the work day and become educated in different topics.

Advice

Work hard and you will get the most out of your experience! I felt very appreciated and respected by my coworkers through my hard work.
