Electric Girls

AmeriCorps VISTA and STEM Instructor

May - August 2020 • New Orleans, LA

What I liked

I absolutely loved working with such a loving and resilient team! At a time of much uncertainty, I was rather unsure as to whether or not Tulane WaveCorps would still proceed with the summer opportunities. However, upon learning that the positions were going to be held remotely, I was all the more excited to work with Electric Girls, a local nonprofit whose mission is to support young female leaders in pursuing interests within the STEM sphere! I learned so many skills and lessons along the way, from grant research to curriculum building. Such an experience has truly fostered within me a greater passion for working with children!

What I wish was different

I wish the summer would have been longer! It was a bittersweet moment, the last day of instructing. Especially towards the end of the last session of Virtual Summer Camp, it was really heartwarming to see the girls staying connected with their peers while in the midst of a pandemic.

Don't be afraid to communicate with your supervisor/fellow colleagues what it is you really want to learn/build upon! There are so many opportunities to work on projects you are most passionate about!
