Emerson College

move in assistant

August - September 2023 • Boston, MA

What I liked

I liked moving in the freshmen class and helping them get settled in

What I wish was different

I wish there was more organization in the building so that the workers did not have to wait a long time to get into the rooms and drop off the student items.

Advice

I would advise drinking water, taking breaks, and sitting down when you can.

Office Secretary

January 2020 • Boston, MA

What I liked

I liked the opportunity to work with international staff, organize snd participate on global events, and expand my network outside my academic field. It opened the doors for me to meet a lot of future employers and interesting mentors.

What I wish was different

Due to the 2020 Pandemic, all events took place online, which takes away from the experience of interacting with different people intimately. I feel I wasn’t able to make that deep of a connection without the face to face interaction.

Advice

Be ready to multitask and have your hands full. It’s not a hard job but it’s not an easy one either. There is always something happening, but it will help you sharp many of your skills as well as make you find skills you did not know you had

Additionally, it was beneficial to be working in an office that helped students navigate the professional world; It was as if I was learning about and living in a professional setting, and feel very grateful for the advice and tips that I learned.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had been assigned more work to do in general; a lot of the time it felt as if I could have been useful if I had been given a task.

You learn from every job! No matter the setting or role you play, putting yourself in a professional workplace forces you to learn about working in general, and how to be organized and self-sufficient.

Emerson College Orientation Core Staff

November 2018 - August 2019 • Boston, MA

What I liked

I got to plan an entire Orientation Program alongside amazing students. I was able to shape the first experience for over a thousand students and reshape the International Orientation Program, as well as make connections with Emerson staff.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have taken time to connect with my immediate peers earlier on.

Advice

Having a good relationship with your mentors is so important! I are so much and felt safe being vulnerable, asking for help and tossing ideas to people that gained my trust in my work environment. It's also important to know you were hired for a reason. You are capable and you are also there to learn, so put yourself out there and don't doubt your capabilities.
