What I liked
Since joining EMI as an account associate, I’ve been given an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience in financial marketing. Despite having limited marketing experience when I started this job, I was brought along quickly by a great team and was able to contribute to client accounts in meaningful ways much earlier than I expected. Colleagues and management are very supportive and many people across different accounts are invested in your success. Overall, EMI has been a great place to transition into my post-collegiate professional life.

Advice
Be prepared to learn on the job—it will help you in the long run. Many people at EMI will be there to support you and everyone from senior executives to other account associates will help you through your transition, but if you’re open to working through new problems and you embrace a degree of uncertainty early on, you’ll better position yourself to succeed on your account.

What I liked
So far my time at EMI has been amazing! From the very start, everyone was helpful, always open to answering any questions I had, and willing to walk me through all the different processes and aspects of my position step-by-step. Furthermore, EMI has given me a wide-range of responsibilities, providing stimulating and exciting work everyday. Along with learning a lot in the work sphere, I have been able to build great relationships at EMI. Despite working remotely since I started, the company has worked hard to maintain the office culture. We have had virtual happy hours and trivia nights which have been very fun and have allowed us all to connect while not being in the office together.

What I liked
My time at EMI has been an incredible experience thus far! As soon as I started, I felt welcomed by my team. Even though we were mostly remote at first, I remember thinking to myself, “I really didn’t think I would laugh this much during the work day”. But, thanks to my team, who never fails to find joy in what we are doing, I truly began to have fun with my coworkers, even if it was physically just me and my computer screen. Aside from the relationships I have been able to build, the work we do and the responsibility given to me as an account associate has been stimulating and rewarding. No day is the same, which helps make the job interesting. Not only are you contributing to live client campaigns, but you are also given projects and research that slowly develop your strategic marketing mind. Overall, I have learned a lot since starting at EMI and have enjoyed my time doing so.

Advice
Any new transition can be overwhelming and can feel a bit confusing, but the beauty of working at EMI is that each individual, no matter what rank or position, possesses a knowledge of the field that they are always willing to share. If you put in the effort by asking questions, reading every email (even if you're not quite sure what it's about yet), and coming prepared for each meeting, you will begin to feel more comfortable in your role!

Account intern
June - August 2017 • Boston, MA
What I liked
I liked being in Boston's financial district and becoming familiar with a typical 8:30-5:30 work schedule. I really enjoyed being challenged with multitasking projects and seeing how a small/medium sized financial marketing firm operated.
What I wish was different
I wish that I had a more hands on experience with actual marketing work rather than research and presentations. I never had the opportunity to work on a specific campaign for our client which I think would have been interesting and useful. I know that if I had been given that opportunity that I would have a better idea of what I want to do post graduation. However, there were no new campaigns launched this summer that would have been appropriate for an intern to handle.
Advice
Be patient and be approachable in the office. Your boss will notice your attitude and pass judgement based on what behavior you are exuding. It is in your interest to act engaged even if you are not.
