State and Local Campaign Intern

July 2020 • Washington, DC

What I liked

This has been my greatest learning experience yet. I have been able to employ the critical thinking, research, and writing skills that I have developed as a student at LMU. Meeting candidates, exploring policy, and learning in the in's and out's of campaigns has been so fun. I even got to attend a conference in which Senator Elizabeth Warren was the key-note speaker. The opportunity to be apart of campaign and election efforts ahead of this critical election has been the honor of a life-time. I am so proud of the work I have done to further social and economic justice by working to elect progressive candidates.

What I wish was different

Due to COVID, this full-time internships was conducted entirely virtually. Every day from 7 am- 3 pm, I was working to support work that was primarily being done from across the country in Washington D.C. It would have been awesome to have the opportunity to go to D.C. and complete this internship in person, but it was amazing nonetheless.

Advice

When applying for competitive internships, you have to be willing to be flexible. I interviewed for this position in April and didn't get an offer to join the team till June, but as it was my goal to work with a high profile women-centered political action committee before I graduated, I immediately made arrangements to make it work and give this internship my all.
