I enjoyed the opprotunity to be able to work with hardworking and inspirered individuals.
What I wish was different
I wished the experiance would have been more collaborative. I realized that because of this, research might not be right for me because of how individualized it is.

Orthopaedic Surgery Intern
June - August 2019 • Atlanta, GA
What I liked
I enjoyed being able to be front row in a variety of Orthopaedic surgeries spanning several specialties such as Trauma, Hand, Oncology, Sports Medicine, Foot & Ankle, Pediatrics, Spine, and Joints. Every week we would rotate to a different specialty and were given a variety of literature to read on a weekly basis in order to have a good understanding of what research is being done in that specialty currently. I thoroughly enjoyed getting to be hands on with the patients, whether that be in the operating room or clinic. I was surprised at how much I was able to get involved with, including suturing patients and assisting with splinting and casting. Every two weeks, I was responsible for shadowing along with the residents on a 24 hour trauma call at Grady Memorial Hospital and was stunned at the variety of conditions and trauma situations I was able to assist with. I had an incredible time and would highly recommend others who are interested in Orthopaedic surgery to get involved in this amazing internship geared towards minorities and women in medicine.
What I wish was different
In some cases, I wish I had a bit of a clearer role than an "intern." I rotated every week, therefore, I was constantly meeting new faces and working with new physicians and residents who weren't aware of what I was allowed to do and what I wasn't. I also wish I had access to patient records in order to better understand their medical history and assist with reading radiographs and MRIs, however, I completely understand that this takes a lot of training and experience that I don't necessarily have.
Advice
I would highly advise anyone interested in the Emory Orthopaedics Summer Scholars Program to study their anatomy and surgical procedures every day before every case they shadow. In some situations, I was not aware of why the surgeon was performing a certain procedure or why he was utilizing certain instruments/techniques, therefore, in the beginning of the internship, I had a rough time getting accustomed. Through this experience, I learned that it was really important to review my anatomy before stepping into the operating room to assist in surgery. I also highly suggest that anyone in this program READ THE LITERATURE PAPERS given to them at the beginning of the internship. The literature papers were extremely insightful and when I was asked a variety of questions by the surgeons, they were impressed at the fact that I knew my stuff.

Neurology Lab Internship
May - August 2018 • Atlanta, GA
What I liked
It was very enjoyable to be able to put to use what I learned at school, when it comes to scientific techniques and anatomy.
What I wish was different
I wish I was able to do more hands on work with lab equipment. My main job was to go through MRI scans of the brain to measure the amount of tissue present in those with Alzheimer's in scans taken two years apart.
Advice
My advice would be is to never forget that each part of the research process is important. The end result of a study which adds to our understanding is only possible through the small acts (like scanning MRI's) and through larger analyses.

Undergraduate Practicum Research Assistant
June 2018 • Atlanta, GA
What I liked
I loved getting to know a different perspective in healthcare by branching off into more psychology based research.
What I wish was different
I loved it, and wished that more students at Georgia State took advantage of such a wonderful opportunity!
Advice
I would share that the best advice is to learn to have the ability to adapt and be flexible. There were times were I did not know much about the skills needed or the work that needed to be done, however through great mentorship I was able to learn and apply these skills and continue the progress of the program.
