Accounting Intern

What I liked

The office was mostly filled with young employees (in their 20's), so as an intern I didn't feel much different than the professional staff. As an accounting major, this internship was at a small private company, giving me a taste of what an accounting career in the private sector is like. I learned a lot about the accounting cycle for companies, particularly bookkeeping, monthly closes, paying bills, recording entries, etc.

What I wish was different

A lot of what I learned was very specific to their accounting software, Sage Intacct. At the same time, I wish I got to do more hands on work in the system. Most of what I did comprised of working on excel spreadsheets that would be uploaded into the system. I think I could have learned more about how the pharmaceutical benefits industry worked if I got to do more hands on work in the system.

Advice

As a lot of questions! I wish I had asked more questions about why the accounting department does certain things, because I think this could have helped me better understand the ins and outs of the industry.
