Evenflow Macro

Economics Research Intern

July 2019 - May 2020 • Washington, DC

What I liked

I had the pleasure of working as an intern at Evenflow Macro for a year, during which time I learned and grew in so many ways. I was assigned exclusively substantive, analytical work that challenged me intellectually from day one. My responsibilities included analyzing international and domestic elections with qualitative and quantitative tools, maintaining and interpreting macroeconomic indicators of recession, and most recently tracking, interpreting, and reporting covid-19 data, plus much more. I researched a very wide array of topics as requested, allowing me to constantly examine fresh ideas and learn new things without ever getting bored or slowing down my growth. Not only that, but also my personal interests and areas of focus were taken into account in my assignments, which is rare in undergraduate internships. Reporting directly to Managing Partner Marc Sumerlin allowed for many valuable teaching and mentorship moments that expanded my understanding of economics, politics, markets, polling, data analysis, communication, and more. I’ve come out of my internship with several valuable things: improved proficiency with Excel, exposure to Bloomberg Terminal, improved data manipulation and economic analysis skills, better written and oral communication skills, valuable connections with professional mentors, a better understanding of my goals, and greater confidence in my abilities overall. I highly recommend working at Evenflow to any student who wants to do real, hands-on work in a fast-paced, yet learning-oriented environment.

What I wish was different

It would have been nice to continue working in person for the last few months of my internship, but due to covid-19 that was disrupted. I nonetheless continued to do important work from home, however, and the flexibility and support extended to me during that time was great.

Advice

Request to work on things you care about, make your unique skills and interests known, have a wide open mind to unfamiliar topics (you never know when you might connect with something new), and ask for help when you need it.
