Regulatory Compliance Intern
June - August 2022 • Rochester, NY
What I liked
The culture was amazing. This made the work that the intern class did very memorable.
What I wish was different
I wish that I had been able to go into the office in downtown Rochester more often. It was a hybrid internship but going into the office with the other interns was very fun.
Advice
One piece of advice would be to not take the time spent here for granted. The ten weeks goes by so fast and I wish I would’ve reflected more on the work done here to really get the full experience. Don’t rush for it to be over!

Actuarial Intern
June 2022 • Rochester, NY
What I liked
I loved getting real-world experience. I was able to apply the knowledge that I learned in class to an actual job and project that was helping the company. I enjoyed meeting other interns and learning more about what actuarial careers look like.
What I wish was different
I wish that there had been more involvement with interns from outside of the Rochester area. I felt that many times when we were at regional meetings, we were not as engaged or did not get as much out of presentations than the interns in Rochester were/did.
Advice
One piece of advice I would share, is to use an internship experience to truly learn about the different careers and paths in the field that you are thinking about going into. I was unsure if I wanted to go into an actuarial career, which was the reason I took this internship. I was able to learn many different career paths and opportunities that were available. Also, make the most of any experiences that you have. Make connections with the people you are working with and other people in the company that you may not be working with.

Safety Net & Individual Market Sales Intern
June - August 2019 • Rochester, NY
What I liked
Everything! I learned about the internship from MGG398 and then applied through handshake. The internship taught me a lot about the insurance industry and myself. I was exposed to sales, customer service, marketing, and engaging with the community at events. I was able to my marketing classes especially Digital Marketing to my competitive intelligence project. To complete my project I worked with other business functions in excellus such as competitive intelligence, community engagement, and marketing to complete it. The internship program also had multiple development workshops to improve our job and soft skills. Everyone was friendly and I really enjoyed being there!
What I wish was different
Maybe more exposure to other functions. I was exposed to a lot but there were others I wanted to learn about. I attempted to meet with some but a lot of people were busy with work. But was able to learn about other jobs as well.
Advice
Learn as much as you can! Initially I wasn’t excited because the health industry doesn’t interest me. But Excellus was the best company to offer me an internship during that summer. I ended up learning a lot not just about insurance. Try and network and learn about every job function available. After the internship I realized I wouldn’t want to work in insurance. But I was exposed to competitive intelligence, marketing, digital marketing, and community engagement. Now I’m focusing on learning more about competitive intelligence because I want to enter that field. Everything you learn can be applied elsewhere as well!

I loved the atmosphere at Excellus. It is very laid back and everyone is extremely nice and helpful. There was no pressure to complete my projects by a certain date so I was able to take my time to teach myself the programs that I needed to use and make sure the projects were completed well.
What I wish was different
It would have been nice if some of the workshops were geared towards the different job functions of the interns instead of grouping everyone together.
