Advice

Just own your work. Confidence is a pretty big issue with any internship, whether it's at Exxon or another company. If you find yourself working at a place like this, you have to realize you deserve to be there. Just ensure you're asking for constant feedback and never lose your hunger to improve.

I liked the collaborative and supportive environment I was put into.

What I wish was different

The program, which was not at the main corporate headquarters, was not very organized. They should have had a backup project for me, as my project came to a halt since a crucial piece of equipment was broken my whole time there.

Advice

Critical thinking and problem-solving skills is probably the biggest thing they were looking for as well as the ability to relate problems to other experiences I had and classes.

More variety of projects, I primarily worked on one all summer without seeing all of the possibilities.

Go for it. ExxonMobil is a corporation that is tough to match in terms of challenges, benefits, and positive work environment.

Better training in the first two weeks. On-boarding could have been an easier process.

In a way, the freedom was a little too much. I wish I had more direction for my project.

Ask for more direction if you need it. And don't be late to meetings!

What I liked

Best people on the planet. Amazing project with tons of hands-on experience. Social climate was amazing - never afraid to approach new people every day and have a conversation. Excellent pay and benefits - some of the best in the industry. Helped me understand what I want for myself and for my career in the future.

What I wish was different

It was a solo project for me this year so I hope next year I get put on a team! Still a great experience.

Advice

Own your strengths and weaknesses. Don't overwork yourself at all - enjoy the time you have during the internship to make new friends and relax. Make use of any opportunity to grow as a professional and as an individual. Spend a bit of extra time to learn about the people you work with - that is what solidified my decision to come back. If you find yourself caring about your work and the people you work with, it barely feels like work.

Technical Intern

What I liked

ExxonMobil is a terrific company that has so many areas to work in besides its trademark oil, gas, and chemical routes. Whether you are a business major interested in accounting, procurement or a science major looking for research opportunities in biofuels or an engineer like myself looking to work at a refinery, build an internal website, or work overseas, there is almost an area that will fit you perfectly! Even though I was there for only three months, my employers gave me a tremendous hands-off project of building a website with ReactJS that had to interact with APIs which required a lot of work, research, and time. Essentially they wanted to challenge me to see what I was capable of which, an invaluable attribute to look for in an internship! Most importantly, the culture is well developed, the teams are incredibly friendly, and the workplace is gorgeous (look up their campus online)!

What I wish was different

As with any huge company, it can be hard for things to change as fast as you are expecting them to go straight out of college. Many people have told me, as I have experienced, that ExxonMobil moves slowly whether in terms of technology, permission overhead, or processes, so do not expect things to move as fast as you want.

Advice

Do not expect yourself to know everything for an internship that you would be expected to know as a full-time hire. The point of an internship is to learn but not only for yourself, the hiring company also benefits because they get to experience a new perspective and see what the new trends out from college students. Always be open with what you do not know because for ExxonMobil one of their grading criteria for a good intern is whether or not you ask questions!

Process Engineer Intern

What I liked

As an intern ExxonMobil, you are treated as a regular employee - you are assigned a relevant project(s) and a technical mentor/supervisor who can guide you as needed. Everyone I worked with over the summer had an open-door policy and was willing to share their knowledge about the company and provide career advice. EM also organizes several events, both volunteer and networking, to allow interns to engage with and learn more about the company.

What I wish was different

Throughout your internship, projects are largely driven by your ambition. I asked for more projects and felt very rewarded at the end of the term when I shared my deliverables. However, it is important to ask for or find work when you inch closer to the end of your projects so that you can continue to contribute and not get bored.

Advice

It is easy to get very involved in your projects that you forget that you are working at such a large company. Take the time to ask people questions about not only the work, but also about their experiences, career paths, and advice they have for interns. Also, a lot of the work can have a steep learning curve, and employees recognize that; however, a willingness to learn and a pleasant attitude are always appreciated.
