Lead Programming Assistant

May 2018 • Boston, MA

What I liked

I loved that this summer job took place outside - it was a nice change of pace from having an indoor job all summer and feeling bummed I couldn't participate in enjoying the weather. You also got to meet and interact with a lot of cool people, not just your co-workers who go to college all around Boston but also tourists who ask you questions and are curious about what is happening in the city. It was a great job for learning about Boston in general. Hours are very flexible and the Lead is usually understanding of conflicts, which is great.

What I wish was different

This job does extend into the fall, and as a fall graduate this actually works out best for me because when I'm completely done with FHM this semester, it will be about that time for me to go job searching. As for someone interested in being a PA, this is a great role if you are interested in learning basic event management in the future as well as having a low key, weekend job in the beginning of the fall. However, if you are looking for something more advanced in event management or interested in taking a different internship, you may want to consider something else. It is possible to drop FHM as the semester begins, but the extra weekend money is also a great perk. Also, if you are not a Lead PA, you don't have many responsibilities and the job becomes more customer service than an actual internship if you don't ask for more involvement.

Advice

While we are a communications school, I think a low-key job like this truly shows you how even the smallest communication goes a long way. This was so essential to this job - I think easier, grunt work jobs like this teach you valuable teamwork and cooperation skills.
