Five Rivers Cattle Feeding

Intern

June - August 2023 • Lamar, CO

What I liked

I thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere and connections I made within this industry. They were very flexible and willing to work with me on numerous accounts. In regards to scheduling, clarification on topics/procedures, and embracing my involvement.

What I wish was different

I honestly just wish I would've been more versed in my Spanish speaking prior, due to the fact that the feed yard I worked at was a primarily Hispanic dominant workforce.

Advice

Be willing to learn. The feed yard setting is a very different aspect even in comparison to working with beef cattle on a ranch. Make the most of the connections you make and your time there because it goes quick. Even if it's not the line of work you're planning on going into I still suggest you experience it. It's well worth it and you'll still learn things that you can carry and apply to your life moving forward. Whether or not you're involved in agriculture, this internship has a lot to offer.

Feedlot Intern

May - July 2018 • Hartley, TX

What I liked

I like that Five Rivers is a people-orriented company; they take care of their full time employees and they take care of their interns. I also liked the pace of the internship; this is not a job sitting in front of a computer or doing busy work pushing papers. This is a hands-on internship where the intern is trained in all of the day-to-day tasks of feedlot operations, but is also afforded the chance to work one-on-one with each manager on-site in applicable tasks.

What I wish was different

The only item that could have improved this internship for me was having a prior working knowledge of the Spanish language. Bilingualism is a huge asset in production agricultural settings.

Advice

One thing about this internship: Know that you will work. One thing I hear from anyone in the company is that it takes a pasion for cattle feeding to stick with this internship and make a career out of it, which is 100 percent true.

Feedyard intern

May - August 2019 • Texhoma, OK

What I liked

Five Rivers is a family based company. From my first day I knew I was in good hands. Every person I worked with went to great lengths to show me everything I needed to know.

What I wish was different

Being a long ways away from my hometown was the hardest thing, but I wouldn’t change anything about my overall experience.

Advice

What you put into this internship is what you will get out of it. Work hard everyday and it will pay off!
