Florida Department of Children and Families

Child Protective Investigator Intern

May - July 2019 • Port Charlotte, FL

What I liked

I liked the independence and support they gave the interns. We were free to find interests and explore them on our own, while also having guidance if we needed it.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been paired directly with a mentor, because I was the entire offices’ intern so no one really took responsibility in taking me under their wing, but I gained a lot of independence and freedom from my experience.

Advice

Make the most of your time, it goes by quickly.

Switchboard Operator

August 2017 • Tallahassee, FL

What I liked

I honestly am grateful for my job. It is very flexible with my school schedule which is very important and most of the people are very kind.

What I wish was different

The callers. Most of them are nice and know what they want but you do get people who become rude when you tell them something they don't like. It's not something you can change but you can change the way you deal with it. You can't be rude back so you're polite and as soon as you leave for the day that stays there.

Advice

You definitely need a lot of patience. At the beginning you have a lot of it because you're still learning but as the people get more and more difficult and you tell them things they don't want to hear, they become rude and that is something you do have to be prepared for and take it in stride.
