Focus on the Family

Marketing Intern

June - August 2021 • Colorado Springs, CO

What I liked

The staff at Focus on the Family was incredible. Everyone was so kind, welcoming, and willing to teach. The company was extremely generous! We were given a stipend, free lunch during workdays, paid weekend outings (hiking, camping, white water rafting, etc.), and free housing with a host family. There was also flexibility to learn from different departments. I was able to attend training in another department and conduct informational interviews outside of my department which was extremely valuable. We were given opportunities to network with recruiters and C-team. Overall, Focus was an incredible opportunity and I would recommend it to anyone!

What I wish was different

I chose not to continue with the company as the pay is low for an onsite position in Colorado Springs. However, many other interns continued with the company and this was not an issue for them. Hybrid/remote work is also not currently an option as far as I am aware.

Advice

This was an extremely valuable experience and I would highly recommend it, especially if you are interested in non-profit work. Definitely take the opportunity to learn from and engage with other departments while you are there. If you don't feel as if you have enough work, conduct informational interviews, ask for a research project, or attend training/meetings in other departments.

Global Communications Intern

June - August 2020 • Colorado Springs, CO

What I liked

The staff members that I worked with in the Global Ministry Department were phenomenal! Not only were they incredibly accessible and supportive, but they made an effort to get to know me and also let me be creative in the completion of my project.

What I wish was different

I was supposed to go to Malaysia for a month as part of the internship, however, due to COVID, this part of the experience was cancelled. Though I do not know if I would necessarily change this, because I wouldn’t have been able to form connections with all of the amazing U.S. staff that I did!

Advice

Take advantage of all the opportunities you will have to connect with staff and learn from them.

Project Management Intern

June - August 2019 • Colorado Springs, CO

What I liked

The community was incredible!! Focus helped me in so many ways, from teaching me valuable professional skills to giving me great on-the-job experience to providing me with some incredible, God-fearing life-long friends! Everyone should give the Focus internships a look!!

What I wish was different

My one complaint was that there was not a resource available to help handle conflict in the workplace, either between interns or other workers. However, in my debrief my last week there, I brought that issue up and they were very receptive and open to making some changes on that issue.

Advice

Commit. Internships are an incredible opportunity to make mistakes and learn in a place where mistakes may get you fired if you are a full-time employee. Committing not only to the mission of the organization but also to your self and your own personal growth will take a lot of hard work and a lot of humbling, but is also extremely rewarding!!

I enjoyed the culture of Focus. Everyone was so kind and willing to help you. I conducted many informational interviews and everyone I talked to was willing to help me in the future.

What I wish was different

The fact that it is an unpaid internship may not appeal to some people. But I found that I gained so much more than monetary value from working at Focus this summer.
