It’s wonderful to work with kids and truly just being present and in the moment with them. This made it easy to enjoy myself and my time together with them. Coworkers are great when it comes to supporting as well.
What I wish was different
The training was not as helpful as it should have been. There are times when challenges do arises and can get overwhelming without proper training.
Advice
It’s a hands-on type of job and you’re constant in close contact with children and other staffs. It can be quite chaotic and overwhelming on occasion, but it’s also a really heartwarming position. If just being silly and being yourself is something you like to do then give this position a try.

What I liked
I enjoyed being able to interact with children and getting to play with them, at the same time getting to teach them skills that will be helpful for them in the real world. I also like how all the staff works as a team in trying to enhance the skills of these children.
What I wish was different
I wish they could have provided better training for the staffs. It felt new staffs were thrust into their position without really understanding the process.
Advice
It is a very satisfying and rewarding job, despite it also being a difficult job. It will be hard in the beginning, but after some adjustments, the job and the interactions will get better.

Human Resource Intern
October - December 2017 • Richfield, MN
What I liked
It was a great introduction to a non-profit. The people at Fraser were professional but very friendly and approachable.
What I wish was different
I wish I had a bit more experience on the interview side of human resources, but instead I did a lot job postings and outreach.
Advice
Don't be afraid to ask questions- most companies that offer internships expect that students don't know the inner workings of a company just yet. They want to help you learn!

Everyone at Fraser is great. The staff works with students very well and are flexible to school schedules, they answer any questions you have to the best of their ability, and the people in the homes are fantastic. There is never a dull day at work and the residents always seem to put a smile on my face.

Developmental Trainee
May - August 2018 • Bloomington, MN
What I liked
My coworkers were wonderful, and I really felt like a member of the community. Helping kids with autism and other disabilities learn social skills often takes the form of playing games, so that was always a blast!
What I wish was different
I wish I’d had more time at Fraser so I could really form relationships with the clients.
Advice
The most rewarding part of the job is getting to spend time with the clients, so definitely focus on that. It’s tough being able to assert yourself as a presence in the therapy groups when you’re only there for three months and you’re the “assistant,” but it also creates a unique perspective that the clients tend to gravitate towards. Find the balance between office tasks (which are always appreciated) and client interaction.
