Breaking News Intern

August 2021 • Phoenix, AZ

What I liked

Friendly team and enjoyable work environment online and in person, great group of mixed experience levels. Full of opportunities for your future

What I wish was different

Breaking News is soul-crushing by nature. Lots of car crashes and tragedies you’re writing each day. Full 8 hr shifts, you can take a short break. Know yourself and your ethics before signing up for this, editing team responds well to some pushback when stories come in from a morally grey area. At the end of the day, remember that YOU decide what you write and what doesn’t get published with your name on it.

Advice

Talk with the editing team before you start, try to take extra care of your mental health during the internship. Also, speed is key with breaking news!

I was treated like a full journalist. I had the responsibility to find stories to cover, but I was also trusted with finding important stories in the community.

What I wish was different

I wish housing was covered, as my entire pay went to housing and I still owed more after that.
