Gaylor Electric

project engineer

May - July 2023 • Sellersburg, IN

What I liked

I think the acubid estimating and live count. examining the drawings and learning the components listed in a drawing was something new I've never done before. I also had a good supervisor was the main person keeping me involved and update to date on what projects he and others was on, he went over his work and the process of estimating and negotiating nearly every time we worked on a project. He was a great teacher about topics on construction, electrical etc., even the conversations we had about finance cause of previous career history, and he gave great life advice. He truly has a passion to do good work for Gaylor to grant more opportunities to the people from his community. If he wasn't there, I don't think I would've done anything or learned anything.

What I wish was different

The commute: I'm used to driving home and to college and other road trips I been on. But driving to work every day was a big adjustment, i did not like being in the car for 30-40mins. I know that's a normally thing for lots of people, so maybe I got to get used to it. and maybe more independent projects, but you must understand there's only so much you can do as a college student. Lastly i wish i wasn't the only intern this summer. they said the previous summer they had 3 people.

Advice

I learned a lot and it change my mind set about engineering jobs. I don't have to be involved in hard labor, lab work to seek a reward. And really the Sellersburg office contributed the most to me wanting to work at Gaylor, I feel like if I was anywhere else, I don't think I would've liked it as much.

Field Electrician Intern

May - August 2019 • Noblesville, IN

What I liked

Getting to work with my hands and actually do meaningful work. The things I did were real things real electricians do

What I wish was different

You could not pick your job cite. I ended up at a location just under an hour from where I was living. A bit of a long drive for a summer job.

Advice

Apply yourself. If I didn’t prove that I was capable those first couple of weeks I would have been doing busy work all summer
