Purchasing Program Mgr and AP5 Crib Support

January - August 2020 • Louisville, KY

What I liked

First of all, it was a awesome experience the GEA employees I met were very open and helpful and working with other co-ops was great. I had the opportunity to work behind the scenes (office position) and then, work in a Manufacturing position to really be involved in how it all comes together.

What I wish was different

Being able to have time to work with other departments within the Office arena to possibly connect with co-ops on other projects.

Advice

Don't forget to get involved with the various opportunities such as the Affinity Group to experience things outside of GEA but, are created by GEA.

Supplier Quality Engineer Co-op

May - August 2019 • Louisville, KY

What I liked

I liked that GE Appliances was a large company with lots of different opportunities to learn. It was nice that there were plenty of other co-ops there so it was easy to make friends.

What I wish was different

My last role didn’t fit me very well. I just didn’t enjoy the job very much so I guess I would’ve liked a different role. It was still a great learning experience.

Advice

Go into internships with an open mind. Don’t be too nervous. You’re there to learn. Just ask questions, focus and try your best and you will be fine.

Supply Chain Co-op

May - August 2019 • Louisville, KY

What I liked

Throughout the summer, I enjoyed the amount of responsibility I was given from day one. My manager trusted me with decision making and project management.

What I wish was different

I wish I would've been more assertive the first half of my rotation. I was hesitant, to make decisions at the beginning of the summer. Once I started to become comfortable in my role, that drastically changed. I believe, if I would've trusted my self from the start, my projects could've seen a quicker completion.

Advice

One piece of advice I would share about this experience, is take moments throughout your day to stop and enjoy the people around you, the tasks you are given, and trust yourself in decisions you're asked to make.

Technology Co-Op

January - April 2019 • Louisville, KY

What I liked

There was a co-op community that was established early on during the rotation. Despite what department you are assigned, everyone is very open to helping and giving engineering advice whether that's for the project you're working on or for future goals. Everything is also fast paced in that there will always be technically challenging projects or task that you will be assigned.

Advice

Consistently ask questions in your first month. The company and technical diversity is very broad so everyone will always have answers or advice towards any question you have.

Financial Development Program Intern

May - August 2018 • Louisville, KY

What I liked

Through this internship program, I was able to learn about corporate finance firsthand. Each intern was given a project to work on throughout the summer; we presented our findings and solutions to the finance department and CFO upon the completion of the internship. I was able to meet a lot of people within the company and truly get a feel what the company was like and the culture of GEA. The program hosted atleast 10 company activities just for our intern class outside of work; these events were so fun to hang out with the other interns and get to know eachother outside of work! One of these events was sand volleyball with the interns!

What I wish was different

I wish I would have been able to have a preference on my project assignment for the summer!

Advice

I would recommend getting connected to as many people as possible within GEA from the get go. Many interns waited until the end to connect with other GEA employees that could really help them! Also, ask a lot of questions: your managers don't expect you to know everything. Get to know the people who work around you. It makes work fun!

Technical Intern

January - May 2017 • Louisville, KY

What I liked

Great company with friendly coworkers. I learned a lot about how products go from the first prototype to the final product.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have seen every aspect of the company, but it is hard to do that in only one semester.

Advice

An internship experience is key to understanding how the knowledge you learn in school is applied to the real world. I have learned things from the work experience that I never would have learned in school.

MCL

May - August 2018 • Louisville, KY

What I liked

The co-op role at GE Appliances was very independent. I was able to directly deal with suppliers and shippers. I also had complete control over my area and workers.

What I wish was different

I wish the hours were different. We worked from 5:30 AM to 2:30 PM. I'm glad I have had the experience in an early morning position, but I would not want to do it again.

Advice

Don't be afraid to take control over your position while in a co-op. My boss was very receptive to my opinions and supportive of my choices. It took longer than it should have for me to feel in control of my area.
