GeekHive

Associate Developer

January - August 2019 • Warwick, NY

What I liked

Since this was my second-time co-oping with GeekHive, everyone was aware of what I was capable of and thus allowed me to take on more responsibilities. During my first co-op, I was already treated like a full-time developer; but, during this second term, that feeling was further solidified. Besides development tasks, I was able to interact with clients even more. As I mentioned in my last review, the people you will work with are the nicest, supportive, driven, and geekiest people you will ever find. I could not ask for a better environment.

What I wish was different

As cheesy as it sounds, I would not have changed anything about my experience.

Advice

It pays to be self-motivated and self-driven, especially in the web development industry. My coworkers and supervisors saw this in me - which helped solidified their trust in my abilities. I believe this was the main reason why I was able to accept more responsibilities. Do note, this does not mean you have to do everything by yourself. Everyone is a team player, so don't be afraid to ask for help when necessary.

Software Developer

January - July 2019 • Warwick, NY

What I liked

- Relaxed work culture allows for working at your own pace. - There will always be help available, so there is no need to be afraid of asking questions. - There is a game room where you can take breaks. - Workplace is very nice and spacious, and made with some custom features. - Close to NYC, and accessible by bus if you do not own a car. - There was more than enough time to learn what was needed to get the job done.

What I wish was different

- I would have hoped for not only more work to keep myself busy, but more substantive work. - A couple interns and co-ops around my age, but I understand that it is dependent on the amount of billable work and resources available

Advice

Compound your learning like you would compound your money investing in the stock market. Treat your early career like a long-term investment. A couple months or even years from now, you will thank yourself for putting in the time.

Software and Web Developer

January - August 2018 • Warwick, NY

What I liked

All of the developers and mentors were eager to help and the higher ups always made sure that you enjoyed doing what you were doing. The projects were also very diverse.

What I wish was different

I wish I had not undersold myself in terms of my PHP skills. As a result, I missed out on a project early on in my internship - that I would have 100% been put on.

Advice

Take every opportunity you're offered.

Developer

January - June 2017 • Warwick, NY

What I liked

A very positive work environment, with challenging and interesting work that was equal parts learning as it was doing work in a professional setting

What I wish was different

It took a little while for anything to start up beyond training and practice programs. But beyond that I can't complain.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask questions. Everyone knows something unique and is happy to help you out when you encounter a problem.
