Systems Engineer Intern

Their internship program included events to get to know other divisions in the company (ex. see drone test flights in the desert) and bond with other interns, yet they still prioritized our learning experience.
What I wish was different
I wish there had not been budget cuts that affected my project.

Ask a lot of questions and network outside of your department.

Mechanical Engineering Intern
May - August 2020 • Englewood, CO
What I liked
I was hands on with important projects throughout the summer and worked with a team of interns and full time engineers. I was required to learn at a fast pace and apply my skills on the job.
What I wish was different
My mentor was very busy and could not dedicate much time to directing and teaching myself and the other intern until after about 5pm every day. I wish that we had more ability to learn from other engineers at the company instead of only one mentor. This happens at General Atomics because of the government work they do.
Advice
I advise to approach internships with a goal of learning on the job and applying those skills. I believe that being able to learn new skills and use them is more important than being amazing from the start. If you are looking to find an internship, show employers your learning ability in a real world context.

What I liked
It was a phenomenal work environment. Everyone that I worked for was supportive and encouraging. I was kept busy.

Advice
Be up front with your employer about what you're willing to do, whether it be time commitment or otherwise, and let them know when the boundaries you described are being pushed. The people at General Atomics did a great job making sure that they weren't asking too much of me.
