Actuarial Development Program Intern

May - August 2020 • Richmond, VA

What I liked

This internship was very beneficial to my understanding of actuarial work. It was well-structured and included meetings with upper-management and opportunities to present. I was assigned projects that directly impacted the company and allowed myself to gain a great technical background in some of the actuarial techniques used. The internship ended with interviews for a full-time position upon graduation, which is ideal.

What I wish was different

Nothing--I felt the experience was exactly what I wanted out of the internship.

Advice

Everyone at the company is very nice and supportive. I would definitely consider this opportunity if you are interested in living in living in the Richmond area.

Graphic Design Intern

March - August 2019 • Richmond, VA

What I liked

This internship was a good opportunity to experience what it's like to work a full time job in a corporate marketing environment. Everyone I met at Genworth was extremely friendly and super helpful and conducive to my work and learning at the company. Genworth also allots their interns 20 paid hours of community service/volunteer time, which allowed me to have fulfilling experiences outside of the office. I also made a lot of friends in the internship program!

What I wish was different

There was not always enough to do, which can cause the work day to drag on quite a bit. Many of the other interns experienced this as well, regardless of department.

Advice

This internship would be best suited for someone who knows that this career path is what they want to pursue. It gives interns a great opportunity to get their foot in the door of this company. You will get out of it exactly as much as you put in.

Communications and Brand Marketing Intern

May - August 2019 • Richmond, VA

What I liked

I was given a lot of freedom and responsibility by my manager to complete the assigned projects in my own time and by my own process. The internship program itself was well-structured and provided many opportunities to interact with other interns, gain exposure to senior leadership, and develop a professional skill set. Interns are also assigned a mentor for the summer who can provide professional advice and insight into working at the company as an employee. It's possible to make a significant impact at Genworth with your work. Treat your internship as a 12-week interview so that you can make the best impression possible - it may result in a return offer.

What I wish was different

Advice

Take advantage of the company culture. Genworth has many Employee Resource Groups, company-wide events, and other opportunities to find your place within its culture during your internship. Genworth interns can partake in Volunteer Time Off, which allows for up to 20 paid hours of community service during company hours.

May - August 2018 • Richmond, VA

What I liked

Company culture, work environment, coworkers, boss, projects, location

What I wish was different

more challenging projects, more projects in general i wish they had a development program that you could interview for at the end of the internship. The IT, finance, and actuarial departments have development programs you interview for at the end, but the Marketing department didn't.
