Cybersecurity Intern

March - September 2019 • Atlanta, GA

What I liked

The supervisors were very generous and helpful.

What I wish was different

The software used to do the cybersecurity work can be frustrating at times.

Advice

I would tell you that it is a very long process; however, if you keep a steady mindset and put the work in, you will see the results back.

Undergraduate Research Assistant

May - August 2019 • Atlanta, GA

What I liked

I liked that I was able to learn under a mentor at the beginning of my internship. This helped me to become familiar with the lab I was working in and understand some of the basic techniques that I would be using. From there, I was able to conduct my own research project which was where I gained the most from the experience.

What I wish was different

I wish that there was more connection between the other summer interns in the lab. There were very few chances to get to know the other people in the internship and make connections with them.

Advice

I would recommend this internship if you know you are interested in pursuing research in one of the life sciences. The internship may be too intensive and require a fundamental understanding and interest in the subject to really be a trial and error kind of experience.

Cichlid Researcher

May - July 2019 • Atlanta, GA

What I liked

Being able to examine cichlid embryos was very engaging, and I ended up keeping pictures and naming one Joergen. I love animal biology, even though I am a chemist!

What I wish was different

I wish that our experiment worked with us, as we ended up hypothesizing what would have happened, based on the few positive results we got. I also wish that we learned techniques more hands-on, rather than verbally.

Advice

My advice would be for others to persevere and analyze what they need to change, rather than solely being repetitive. We had to deviate from the literature 90% of our research, because our compounds would not react.

CATLab Student Assistant

December 2017 - July 2018 • Atlanta, GA

What I liked

I certainly liked helping out students on a day to day basis, and definitely liked talking to my coworkers while I was there. The pay was good for what the job was (computer lab front desk), and I certainly gained good first-level IT experience. Very flexible on scheduling, and overall a generally relaxed atmosphere (although at times could get hectic).

What I wish was different

I would have liked it much better if suggestions and ideas were actually acted upon (very much an attitude of not being too efficient), and if problems that had been repeatedly brought up had actually been fixed. The university in general has serious efficiency problems, especially in the HR department (took over a month to get hired).

Advice

I would definitely recommend this position to GSU students, whether downtown or at the perimeter campuses. It is a good early job experience, and pays relatively well for a university job at this level. However, expect hiring to take awhile - if you urgently need a job soon, I would look elsewhere.
