Gerdau

Mechanical Engineering Intern

June 2020 • Midlothian, TX

What I liked

I really liked the experience and knowledge that I gained. Real world experience has completely changed my perspective on the mechanical engineering industry. Visually seeing what I learned in school for the past 4 years, and seeing it applied in the work place was extremely astounding. I was able to create my own designs and work with the fabricators to get it built and applied. I learned the process of designing, and creating prototypes that change through tests, which will be very beneficial for me moving forward in my career.

What I wish was different

I wish that the corona virus did not impact the experience, but Gerdau did very good to adjust their protocols according to the CDC guidelines to make for a safe work place environment.

Advice

Do not be afraid to ask questions. Showing workers in the industry that you are not a "know it all" because you went to engineering school reveals to the workers that you are there to learn and that you are ambitious to do so. The workers will most often times respect that and be happy to teach you.

What I liked

I like being able to get away from my computer and actually working on the floor with our Millwrights. You're not confined to a desk, if you don't want to be.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have done some more rotation throughout the mill, before getting slammed with projects. I also wish my student loans weren't so expensive, so I could actually make some money.

Advice

It truly is a great experience so far. Gerdau offers a lot of room for improvement and plenty of room to grow. There is opportunity to travel to a variety of locations, which just adds to the complete experience. The steel mill isn't for everyone, so keep that in mind.

Process Engineering Intern

What I liked

I appreciated the freedom to explore work related to my interests within the different processes. On top of that, the people there made my experience so enjoyable!

What I wish was different

Despite understanding that it was a summer internship taking place between two school years, I wish I was there longer than three months so I could have accomplished more projects.

Advice

There are a lot of appealing opportunities within Gerdau for students seeking valuable experience. The different aspects of the company allow for various growth opportunities both for an individual's personal and professional life.

What I liked

Pay was good and I was allowed to work overtime. The steel mill itself is a fascinating and exciting environment to work in, I learned a ton about the process and machines used. Projects and daily work kept me busy all summer, lunch was paid for at least once a week.

What I wish was different

Projects I received were more open ended (i.e. see if you can make improvements rather than solving an existing problem). Not as much direct guidance, you have to be proactive and ask for help otherwise you end up sitting around because the managers are all busy.

Advice

Everyone is willing to help but you have to ask. Be proactive and take initiative if you want to do something / want to make progress on projects.
