What I liked

What I liked most about the Gibson Consulting internship program was the level of responsibility and trust bestowed upon us as interns. We weren't relegated to coffee runs or mundane tasks; instead, we were fully integrated into the teams, collaborating on meaningful projects that had a real impact on the firm's clients. This approach made me feel like a valued member of the team, rather than just an intern. Another highlight was the accessibility to mentors and leadership figures, including partners. The transparency and willingness to engage with interns was great. This open-door policy facilitated a lot of knowledge sharing and offered unique insights into the workings of the industry. The opportunity to engage in conversations with such seasoned professionals was both enlightening and inspiring.

What I wish was different

While the program excelled in numerous aspects, there was one aspect I wished could be different - the ability to interact more frequently with fellow interns. The challenging schedules and diverse assignments often made it difficult to connect with peers. More structured opportunities for intern interaction, perhaps through regular meetings or workshops, could enhance the sense of community among interns, facilitating the exchange of ideas and experiences.

Advice

One piece of advice I would offer to future interns is to seize the opportunity to network and build relationships across the firm. The genuine interest in your success radiates from every member of the team, regardless of their position. Don't hesitate to reach out, share your aspirations, and learn from those around you. The willingness of upper management to guide and support interns is a unique aspect of the Gibson experience, and taking advantage of it can greatly enrich your journey.

What I liked

My internship experience at Gibson was exceptional, setting it apart from any other. Right from the beginning, I was treated as a valued consultant rather than an intern, and I am grateful for the level of responsibility I was entrusted with daily. While I was engaged in tasks that supported my team, I was also presented with an individual intern project that allowed me to leverage my skills in addressing Gibson's real-world business needs. Witnessing the tangible impact of my contributions to the company has been incredibly rewarding. What made this experience even more valuable was the mentorship and support extended to me by everyone at Gibson throughout my internship. Their guidance played a pivotal role in both my personal and professional growth, and I am appreciative of their willingness to share their expertise and insights. The collaborative environment at Gibson aligns with their commitment to promoting a strong sense of community among team members. This atmosphere not only exists within the company but also extends to its approach to building strong relationships with clients.

What I wish was different

I would have liked to work with other interns if I had the opportunity. The interns were split into separate teams, and while this gave me a hands-on learning experience, I would have enjoyed getting to know the interns more and learning about their experiences at Gibson as well. With that being said, Gibson still held some firm events, and team schedules would occasionally align where we could get dinners with one another.

Advice

Be ready to embrace change and be flexible. The business environment is continuously changing, and so are the needs of the clients Gibson supports, so be prepared to apply a variety of skills at Gibson. Also, don’t disvalue your team, and always try to network with people. Working at Gibson requires you to have technical skills, but you also need to understand how to be client-facing.

What I liked

Gibson provided an incredible internship experience with unparalleled consulting exposure. Every step in their process offered a new and exciting learning opportunity that interns are fully immersed in. The work is non-repetitive and each day offered a new challenge.

What I wish was different

Interns are very much a part of their team which is phenomenal for growth opportunities and experience, however generally do not get to work with all of the other interns. Gibson does a good job of providing a few chances throughout the summer for all interns to get together but it is not the daily experience.

Advice

Always carry a notebook and pen, there are learning opportunities every day and great lessons to capture. Come prepared, ask good questions, and never be afraid to offer input.

What I liked

Great place to grow data analysis, interpersonal, and presentation skills. From day 1, they tell you you are a consultant, not an intern. My responsibilities were that of a full-time consultant, which means you learn on the job. Proficient Excel skills are needed here with the opportunity to grow in whatever professional skills you desire. Overall, a wonderful internship. Everyone is kind and want to see how much you develop over the summer.

What I wish was different

More training, more time to adjust to the work environment. If they recruited more equally across the Big 10, it might be better. It felt like the firm recruited heavily from UW-Madison and it would have been nice to have more resources from Champaign.

Advice

You get out what you put in. You'll be rewarded with international travel if you're among the top interns in the group. You'll impress people there if you show resilience and work your very hardest. Never stop learning and asking questions there.
