Advice

Some advice I would share regarding this experience is to always be open to learning new things. When you hear someone say "...it is what you make of it," it truly is what you make of it. At the end of the day you are the captain of your own ship. Take advantage of every opportunity that is given to you and learn from your co-workers. You will be shocked by how much you can learn in just a few months.

Construction intern II

June - September 2021 • San Jose, CA

What I liked

My team was amazing. Great people to work with who makes the work place fun, and they assign you a mentor in which you can ask questions.

What I wish was different

I wish the internship experience had been a little bit more structured and planned out in allowing me to experience different aspects of construction management.

Advice

Don’t be afraid to ask for greater responsibilities than what they assign you at first in order to maximize your time learning as an intern. And to greater your chances of receiving a full time offer, have great work ethic and don’t sit around doing nothing even if they don’t assigned you anything. Go around the office and ask if anyone needs help with tasks.

Construction Intern II

May - August 2019 • Lincoln, RI

What I liked

Everything the company had to offer. I never felt as though I couldn't learn. I could always ask questions and receive an answer that made sense. Being a family company, everyone cared for everyone so when family issues arose, they helped me to work around those issues wile still being a part of the team.

What I wish was different

I wish I had been able to work more. Interns were limited to 40 hour work weeks, so it always felt a bit weird to leave way ahead of everyone else. While other aspects made it feel as though I was part of the team, that part didn't. But the reasons are understandable.

Advice

Always ask questions. The only way to get a solution to a problem you don't know how to solve, is to ask an expert the question.

Construction Project Management Intern

May - August 2019 • Providence, RI

What I liked

The hands on experience had allowed me to use every aspect of the CM program in real world scenarios.

What I wish was different

The commute was over an hour each way. This was well worth the experience, but not ideal.

Advice

As a construction management intern, it is important to get experience working with a team in the field. I would recommend asking as many questions as you can and to try and assume some responsibilities on site to get the most out of your experience.

Construction intern

May - August 2019 • Columbus, OH

What I liked

I was put into a position where my own choices affected how much I would gain from the co-op. I could be as involved as I chose to be.

What I wish was different

The timing of the co-op did not line up well for me to see the project come together. I saw mostly preconstruction paperwork from one job, and close out paperwork from another.

Advice

Never be afraid to ask questions. The people I worked with understood that I didn’t know very much in the beginning, and were very happy to teach me what they knew.

What I liked

The culture of Gilbane was incredible. The people I worked with day to day were all so friendly and supportive of the work I was doing. I was there completing actual hands-on projects that were implemented into the site that I was assigned. It was a rewarding and eye-opening experience and I would recommend it to anyone curious about the construction management industry.

Construction Management Intern

June - August 2019 • South Windsor, CT

What I liked

Loved that they went out of their way to show off other job sites so you would not have only one experience for the entire summer. Was also fortunate enough to be put on the site that was in its early stages, so I was able to experience plenty of interesting phases of construction.

What I wish was different

This is mostly personal preference, but I would have liked to have been able to see what preconstruction was like, and there weren't too many of those projects going on in the CT branch.

Advice

Take time to go out and experience every part of the job. Talk with contractors, shadow the superintendent, help the project engineer, all of it yielded valuable information about what each job does on a job site.
