What I liked

I greatly enjoyed interacting with the students and being able to participate in mutually-beneficial individual conversations with the students about their experiences in high school, their preparation and hopes for college, their passions, and their perspectives on myriad topics. I found that despite the great geographical distance between myself and the students, we shared many similarities, whether academical or interest-wise. Linda Wu and her fellow associates provide guidance and stability as leaders, as well as flexibility when necessary. Although professional, she is approachable and encouraging toward her employees and students. The result of her efforts is an extremely healthy work environment that not only ensures productivity but that the experience is enjoyable.

What I wish was different

I don't have many critiques, as my experience was a positive one almost across the board. However, since the conversations were held virtually over Zoom, the time limitation on free Zoom accounts made it more difficult since the Zoom meetings occasionally ran out of time before the actual time was up. Nonetheless, it wasn't too much of an issue; I simply restarted Zoom and picked off where we left off.

Advice

As a result of the time difference, it is important to ensure that you are comfortable either maintaining or adapting a late-night sleep schedule so as to accommodate the students. Additionally, since many student meetings are back-to-back, it is best to ensure that you use the break time in between to recharge or fulfill any requirements, such as food, bathroom breaks, etc. I would also like to emphasize that communication is important and greatly appreciated, especially due to the time differences. But, as aforementioned, you don't need to worry about receiving an angry or deprecating response because of scheduling conflicts or the like; Linda is very understanding!

Program Assistant

What I liked

Linda Wu is a great businesswomen and a fantastic supervisor. I truly enjoyed working with her as she is driven, passionate for the company’s mission and her students, and strong-willed. I also enjoyed talking to the students one-on-one about college, majors, student campus life, their interests, and transitioning into the university.

What I wish was different

Because of the time difference, you cannot mind the night sessions and/or weekend sessions (I was a remote program assistant during COVID whereas in other years, this program would have been in-person in the states). Thus, my experience was unique as this required more effort for me to check my messages and emails and helped me work on improving my time management.

Advice

I would say to communicate very well to your supervisor about any questions you or feedback on the program from your’s or the student’s point if view. Make sure you plan your meals and water breaks accordingly so that you are all ready to speak to different types of students.
